Engineers

It may not seem like a natural fit, but the critical thinking and quantitative analysis that engineers learn are skills that are also applicable in the consulting world. At BCG, you will transform from an engineer to a business consultant, working as a valued team member and making a genuine impact on our clients.
Why Does BCG Seek Engineers?

We believe that engineers can bring special value to management consulting and to BCG. Engineers, through their academic and practical training, have learned to apply structured critical thought and quantitative analysis to solving practical problems. The success of those who have joined BCG with engineering backgrounds shows that those skills result in superior problem-solving abilities, which, coupled with the different perspectives of the various engineering fields, can translate into innovative and effective solutions for our clients.

In fact, many of our new hires come to BCG from a diversity of backgrounds, including engineering. We seek outstanding talent, first and foremost, and recognize that talent can be found in virtually all disciplines. We also attach considerable value to the outside-the-box thinking that is generated by having people from different academic areas exchanging thoughts and ideas.

Many engineers have joined BCG and found it the perfect platform for leveraging and expanding on their technical training. They have pushed their careers into new realms and, in the process, achieved considerable professional and personal growth.

What Makes BCG Different from Your Other Options?

At BCG, you will quickly make the successful transition from being an “engineer” to becoming a “business consultant with an engineering background.” Rather than losing your engineering skills, your work at BCG will complement them with a thorough business foundation and soft skills. Taken together, these will comprise an unparalleled skill set.

At BCG, we believe that there are many paths to success. Day-to-day learning on the job ensures growth, and our training program is tailored to meet individuals’ needs and ambitions.

Comprehensive entry-level training is standard for all new hires; a wealth of tutorials covering the full spectrum of business concepts supplements that training and gives you the opportunity to customize your training. At every stage of your career, you can join your cohort in additional trainings, many of which are global. Individual training is offered for those who want to focus on pushing themselves in a specific area. You will find that the BCG learning curve is steep but rewarding.

You will also find that there is considerable scope for the direct application of your skills: BCG’s work spans such topics as aerospace and defense, energy, chemicals, industrial goods, and the automotive industry. But there are also opportunities to expand into such areas as consumer goods and retail, media and entertainment, travel and tourism, and financial services. At BCG, the opportunities are endless, and we encourage our new recruits to chart their own course toward success.

What to Expect

As a consultant at BCG, you will work as a contributing member of a case team, helping some of the world’s most dynamic organizations tackle critical problems and initiatives. The challenges will be high level and strategic, and the solutions you and your team help create will have genuine impact on the clients’ business.

The problem-solving methods will encompass top-down (that is, hypothesis-driven) and bottom-up (that is, fact-grounded) approaches, and you will become comfortable working with both. The work will test and expand not just your analytical skills but your communication abilities as well, as you will be expected to present and be an advocate for your ideas and findings, both among teammates and with clients.

You will be working with a diverse mix of highly talented individuals—at BCG and on the client side. You will have the opportunity to apply your skills to a breadth of challenges, from mergers and acquisitions to supply chain integration. You will have opportunities to work in different locations, including abroad if you wish.

In sum, if you are seeking to expand your boundaries, push yourself, and be recognized and rewarded for your unique contributions, consider management consulting at BCG.
